The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit…and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word" (CCC # 1213).
St. Theodore Catholic Church assists families as they prepare for this first Sacrament of Initiation. Below is a description of the process to have your infants and young children under age 7 baptized.
For children ages 7 and older and for adults, see the "RCIA/RCIC" tab for more information, or call us at 337-855-6662.
Godparents
Parents are asked to choose at least one "God-parent" (sponsor) for their child to be baptized. If one is chosen, a male or female may be selected; if two are chosen, one must be male, and one female. The God-parent must be Catholic, over age 16, have received Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and be in full communion with the Church and able to receive the Sacraments. He or she (or they) must be faithful practicing Catholic so that he/she (they) can fulfill the role to assist the parents in raising the child in the Catholic Faith. Proof of their Sacrament of Confirmation must be submitted before the Baptism. If one of the "God-parents" is not Catholic or does not meet these important requirements, then he or she may still serve as a "witness" to the ceremony although he or she would not be listed as a "God-parent" or "sponsor" in the Registry.
Baptismal Preparation Class Schedule
The Baptismal Preparation Class is required for parents baptizing their first child. All parents who have not previously taken a preparation class must do so before the baptism of their child.
The Baptismal Preparation Class is held on the last Sunday of each month in Doyle's Place (behind the main office) or the Church office Conference Room. The class time is 2:00 PM. Please call the office at 337-855-6662 to register. There is no fee for this class.
The Sacrament of Baptism is conferred immediately following the 10:30AM Mass, on Sundays in the main church, according to the availability of the Church and the Deacon and/or priests.
